About Dr. Carlson
William E. Carlson, MD is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and Managing Partner of South Florida Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. Dr. Carlson earned his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his General Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery internship and residency training through Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Carlson has focused his orthopaedic practice on shoulder care and treatment, including arthroscopic and shoulder stabilizing procedures. He also performs both Total Shoulder Replacement and Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement. Reverse Shoulder Replacement is a relatively newer procedure for patients who have a rotator cuff tear in addition to arthritis, and Dr. Carlson was one of the first in the area to start performing the procedure. Dr. Carlson also treats a variety of knee conditions and provides both surgical and non-surgical treatment options. He performs both total knee replacement surgery and total shoulder surgery in the outpatient setting. He also offers hyaluronic acid joint injections as part of his non-surgical treatment plan for joint pain and arthritis.
Dr. Carlson has been practicing orthopaedic surgery since 1986. He has held several administrative Medical Staff positions at Martin Health Systems, including Member of the Board of Directors, Co-Chairman of the Professional Affairs Committee, and President of the Medical Staff. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Florida Coast Medical Center, the newly opened state-of-the-art healthcare facility in Port St. Lucie.
Dr. Carlson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the Florida Medical Association and Martin County Medical Society. He also maintains affiliations with the Saint Louis University Alumni Association, Dubourg Society SLU, White Coat Society SLU, and University of Illinois Alumni. He is an Assistant Professor at Florida State University College of Medicine and has presented clinical research at national meetings and is published in peer-reviewed medical journals. Dr. Carlson has consistently been recognized as one of the top physicians in his field.
