Alan R. Blackburn II, MD

Dr. Blackburn is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with advanced fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery. He provides comprehensive operative and non-operative orthopaedic care for adults and children, with a specialized focus on conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and upper extremity. His surgical approach includes small-incision, less invasive, and minimally invasive techniques when appropriate for the patient’s condition and treatment goals.

Dr. Blackburn earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in Athens before earning both his medical degree and a master’s degree in molecular medicine from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia. He remained at Augusta University to complete his five-year residency in orthopaedic surgery. Following residency, he completed a one-year fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he received advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and upper extremity.

Dr. Blackburn treats a wide range of orthopaedic conditions in both adults and children. His areas of expertise include carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, arthritis of the hand and wrist, DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis, ganglion cysts, Dupuytren’s contracture, fingertip injuries, tennis and golfer’s elbow, tumors of the skin, soft tissues, and bone, overuse injuries, tendinitis, sprains and strains, fractures, dislocations, and joint instability. His advanced fellowship training allows him to provide specialized care for many common and complex conditions affecting the hand and upper extremity.

Dr. Blackburn takes a patient-centered approach to orthopaedic care and believes patients should have a clear understanding of their diagnosis and treatment options. During each office visit, he takes the time to explain the nature of the condition, discuss available treatment options and their expected outcomes, and develop a treatment plan tailored to each patient’s individual needs, lifestyle, goals, and circumstances. His goal is to provide personalized care based on the best and most current medical evidence while helping patients make informed decisions about their treatment.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Blackburn has contributed to the field of orthopaedic and hand surgery through research and academic work. He has presented his research at national and international orthopaedic meetings and has published peer-reviewed articles and a book chapter in the orthopaedic literature. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the Florida Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. Blackburn joined South Florida Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine as a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and hand and upper extremity specialist, providing comprehensive orthopaedic and specialized hand, wrist, and elbow care to patients throughout the Treasure Coast and South Florida.
