Pinched Nerve

Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, and lower back pain are often caused by a pinched nerve. When left unmanaged, these conditions can cause more pain, discomfort, and limitations in your activity. Some of these conditions can also cause permanent damage.

What is a Pinched Nerve?

A pinched nerve is a compressed nerve that occurs when certain changes in the body affect the space that’s normally allotted for nerve tissue. These changes may be a result of sprain injuries, swelling of the surrounding tissues, or damage to the tissues (such as the case of a herniated disc).

Pain is the most common complaint with a pinched nerve. This pain usually intensifies during sleep. Some describe it as an electric shock sensation.

Oftentimes, this pain is felt along the path of the compression and not on the actual site where there is a pinched nerve. For example, in sciatic nerve compression, the pain and other symptoms are felt down on one leg although the site of compression is at the lower back.

Other Symptoms of Nerve Compression

Aside from the pain, nerve compression may also cause weakness, tingling sensation, numbness, and in some cases, burning sensation on the affected site.

Treating Nerve Compression

Initially, more conservative measures are suggested to relieve the pain and other symptoms. This may include resting the affected site, immobilizing it using splints or braces, using anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy.

If these measures provide too little to no relief at all, you may be recommended for surgery. The goal of the surgery is to relieve the compression by providing more room for the nerve.

The type of surgery you’ll have depends on the underlying cause of the nerve compression.
