Physical Therapy for the Spine

When you’re experiencing joint pain, stiffness, or inflammation, moving is probably the last thing in your mind. However, movement is necessary for healing and pain relief. South Florida Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine has an experienced team of physical therapists who can help you with guided exercises to do this.

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is considered a cornerstone of rehabilitation as it helps relieve pain and inflammation. As it also improves the blood flow to injured sites, physical therapy also plays an important role in post-surgical recovery.

In physical therapy, there are different types of exercises and movements that are carefully designed to meet the patient’s needs. It could be an improvement of joint and muscle function for some while for others, a form of rehabilitation.

Your doctor may recommend physical therapy if you have:

• Arthritis
• Repetitive stress injuries
• Trauma injuries
• Chronic pain
• Tendon tears
• Osteoporosis
• Had orthopedic surgery

Different Physical Therapy Modalities

At South Florida Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, our physical therapists will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan. Depending on your case and goals, we may utilize one or a combination of these treatments:

• Therapeutic exercises
These guided passive and active activities can improve flexibility, strength, and range of motion.

• Ice therapy
Using an ice pack or ice massage can help in alleviating inflammation, swelling, or muscle spasms.

• Ultrasound and other thermal therapies
This PT modality is good for relieving pain, promoting tissue repair, and relaxing muscles and soft tissues.

• Electrotherapeutics
This refers to gentle electrical stimulation that can promote healing and improve nerve or muscle function.

Our physical therapists will guide you all throughout your treatments. They will also teach you exercises you can safely do at home so you’ll have continuous rehabilitation.
