Microdiscectomy

The pain and discomfort from a slipped disc and sciatica can greatly affect your quality of life. South Florida Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine has a team of experts who specialize in minimally invasive procedures that can treat these conditions.

What is a slipped disc and sciatica?
A slipped disc occurs when the intervertebral disc of the spine loses its normal shape and/or consistency. This loss in shape and/or consistency happens when the soft inner material leaks out of its external covering. It may be a result of natural degeneration or trauma.

Sciatica, on the other hand, is the term used to describe the nerve pain felt on the leg. This is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. This pain can be felt in the lower back, radiating deep into the buttocks and traveling down into the legs.

Aside from pain, both slipped disc and sciatica causes numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness. When left unmanaged, they can worsen and may even cause permanent nerve damage.

How can microdiscectomy help?

Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that can benefit patients suffering from slipped disc or sciatica. Also known as microdecompression, this procedure involves the removal of portions of the herniated disc to relieve the pressure on the spinal nerve column.

Performed under general anesthesia, microdiscectomy is done while the patient is lying face down. A small incision is made directly over the affected disc and with the use of a special tool, the surgeon removes the damaged herniated tissue. The incision is closed with sutures and the patient goes home on the same day or the morning after.

Recovery time after microdiscectomy varies, but many patients start to feel better about two weeks after the procedure.

Then, you will be able to resume your normal activities with precautions on lifting and strenuous activities.
